Dark Waters

The sky is black like ink
while my face dips in
and out of the waves,
my hand stretching
out in front of me,
searching for another hand—
I find none.

My heart is suspended in
the middle of the ocean—
lub, dub, lub, dub—
and the beat is consumed by the blue.

Water floods inside me—
my ears are rushed and hear nothing—
but my insides are still stained.

My fingers reach under my skin—
I rub and I rub and I rub—
unclean, unclean, unclean.

The enormity of life cascades—
the sunlight begins to fade—
I’m swimming away from myself.

Noone will be pushed off a cliff. Probably.
